HEARD IT THROUGH THE HOPVINE
Is something fishy about that pint of Guinness? Fish bladder in the beer? Sure, the notorious scaremonger Food Babe may have given this some Internet traction, but it was Stephen Colbert’s 20-something, tech-savvy but info-starved writers who popularized it on his show. They thought having fish bladders in Guinness was, you know, funny. Well, beer geeks know that the bladders of fish (isinglass) have been used for many years to clarify beer. But our vegan friends, whose Guinness intake defies measurement, must be coddled so that the mighty stout maker from Dublin will cave to the cacophony of the craven kale crowd. And thanks, Don “Joe Sixpack” Russell, for giving this story some legs…

Beer Names We Love: Anaheim’s Bottle Logic Brewing got another gold medal for its brilliantly named Lagerithm. Orange County’s Noble Ale Works’s Nose Candy earned a bronze medal as a session IPA. The naughty Noble’s signature beer, Naughty Sauce, is reminiscent of Alaska’s Midnight Sun Brewing’s classic Panty Peeler. Keep ’em coming, brewers…

Ground Control to Major Tom: Drink your pee water and try to carry on… NASA recently contributed recycled wastewater from the space station to Mavericks Brewing, an affiliate of Half Moon Bay Brewing, south of San Francisco, for an experimental beer demonstrating an urban sustainability project at a conference in Richmond, Calif. A five-judge panel of experts couldn’t tell which beer was made from astronaut wee-wee, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Although Singapore and Saudi Arabia recycle almost all of their wastewater, it remains illegal for Californians to redirect treated wastewater into the water system. The Urban Planning and Sustainability Project is making headway with the state Water Resources Control Board, which is expected to address the issue this year. Meanwhile, enjoy a fresh Mavericks Astronaut Ale soon…

A reader sent in an item that was listed for sale on eBay in early October 2015: Celebrator Spring Beerfest pub mat from May 22, 1999. Current bid, $6.86. Better get your bids in now! … And from Celebrator writers Steve and Gail: “Random act of beer community kindness: Drop your pals off at a brewery they don’t know yet!” Thanks, Beer By BART… Positivity: Never look at your beer as half empty. Look at it as you’re halfway to your next beer…

ManCan, a keg-style growler system that keeps your favorite beer delicious and fresh, presented a $500 check to the Pink Boots Society, a national group that brings awareness of and support to women professionals in the beer industry. ManCan, launched on Kickstarter in early 2015 and perhaps missing a potential audience of non-man beer drinkers, offered a limited-edition WoManCan with the Pink Boots Society logo on it. Ten percent of the proceeds from the WoManCan sales went to benefit the Pink Boots Society…

Here’s a little something I’ll bet you didn’t know you needed: The team at BeerDeCoded has the means to sample — on a molecular, biological level — 100 beers, according to Maxim. The goal is to create the genomic “Tree of Beer” that will fuel an app to help you decide exactly which beers — according to your own taste — you might prefer from that complicated beer list. Having successfully raised over 10,000 euros to fund a Kickstarter project, the BeerDeCoded team finished benchmarking 96 beers from 20 countries. This should make choosing a beer APPsolutely foolproof…

There’s a new way for chocolate and red wine lovers to express their love for the unbeatable combination. Swedish company LELO has revealed LILY 2, an aphrodisiac sex toy with a “Bordeaux and Chocolat” aroma. There’s science behind why you love the smell of chocolate, and it’s not just because you have a sweet tooth. Cocoa beans contain small levels of tryptophan, a building block of serotonin, which is a brain chemical involved in sexual arousal. Chocolate also causes phenylethylamine, a stimulant related to amphetamine, to be released in the brain, just like when people fall in love. So THAT’s why chocolate gets you off…

Mike “Rooster” McConaughey, brother of Matthew McConaughey, discussed his motivations for naming his now nine-year-old son Miller Lite, which included: “I can take Miller Lite to church.” The brewery is reported to have gifted Mike with a year’s supply of his son’s namesake beer… Meanwhile, golden boy Yuseff Cherney, COO/head brewer/cofounding distiller of Ballast Point Brewing in San Diego, which was recently acquired by Constellation Brands for, gulp, one billion dollars (that’s with a “B,” folks), was waxing nostalgic on social media, reminding everyone that not all that long ago he was brewing in a plastic bucket. We need to find that “billion dollar bucket” and put it on display at the GABF…
