23 YEARS
OF CHEERS & BEERS!
BERKELEY, California — The Celebrator Beer News
celebrated its 23rd anniversary on Sunday, February 20,
2011, with a brewers party at Trumer Brauerei. This event
drew to a close a 10-day celebration of beer in the San
Francisco Bay Area called San Francisco Beer Week. Over
35 invited breweries poured their best brews for a sold-out
crowed of some 600 Celebrator readers and beer
aficionados. Attending were Celebrator writers
and beer industry luminaries, including pioneer figures
in the craft beer movement and CEOs of many well-known
breweries.
Jeremy Sowers’s Emergency BBQ of San Carlos, Calif.,
served up some wonderful tri-tip and jambalaya that paired
nicely with the outstanding selection of beers. Many attendees
used the convenient shuttle sponsored by the Celebrator,
which ran from the North Berkeley BART station to Trumer
Brauerei.
The event took place one day after the start of the legendary
Barleywine Festival at the Toronado in San Francisco and
Anchor Brewing Company’s hosting of the Homebrew
Club of the Year — the Maltose Falcons from Southern
California. Several of the Maltoseters were in attendance
at Trumer.
Breweries pouring at the Celebrator party included
Abita, Alaskan, Anchor, Anderson Valley, Artisanal Imports,
Auburn Alehouse, Beach Chalet, Bear Republic, Blue Frog,
BridgePort, Eel River, Firestone Walker, He’Brew,
High Water, Iron Springs, Lagunitas, Magnolia, Marin,
Moylan’s, New Belgium, North Coast, Pacific Coast,
Pacific Libations, Phoenix Management, Pyramid, Rubicon,
Russian River, Shiner, Shipyard, Sierra Nevada, Six Rivers,
Stone, ThirstyBear, Tied House, Triple Rock, 21st Amendment
and our host brewery, Trumer.
Brewery owners and CEOs attending included Brian and Lisa
Ford (Auburn Alehouse); Ted Vivatson (Eel River); Jeremy
Cowan (He’Brew); Steve and Barri Altimari (High
Water); Dave McLean (Magnolia); Don Gortemiller and Steve
Wolff (Pacific Coast); Mark Cabrera (Phoenix Management);
Vinnie and Natalie Cilurzo (Russian River); Ron Silberstein
(ThirstyBear); John Martin (Triple Rock, Drake’s,
and Jupiter); and Shaun O’Sullivan and Nico Freccia
(21st Amendment).
A special toast was offered to the crowd by beer writer
Jay Brooks, and another toast by yours truly to the memories
of fellow beer writer Bill Brand and the recently departed
