The History and Legacy of Celebrator

Celebrator Beer News was founded in January 1988 by Tom Dalldorf as a quarter-fold tabloid—what was then called a “brewspaper.” At a time when the American beer landscape was dominated by mass-produced lagers, Celebrator became the first publication in the United States dedicated exclusively to microbrewed beer—long before “craft beer” became part of the mainstream vocabulary.

What began as a regional publication focused on California’s emerging brewery scene quickly grew alongside the industry it helped document. As craft brewing expanded across the West Coast and into the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountains, Celebrator’s reach followed—becoming a trusted source for news, commentary, and cultural insight during one of the most transformative periods in American beer history.

A Voice in the Rise of Craft Beer

From its earliest editions, Celebrator featured original editorial from some of the most respected beer writers in the world. Contributors included influential voices such as Michael Jackson—widely regarded as one of the most important figures in modern beer journalism—and Stephen Beaumont, whose global perspective helped shape coverage of the evolving craft movement.

This foundation of knowledgeable, passionate storytelling established Celebrator as more than a publication—it became part of the historical record of craft beer’s rise.

Growth and Distribution

As readership expanded, Celebrator evolved into a globally distributed print publication with a circulation of tens of thousands of copies per issue. Its 50+ page, full-color bimonthly magazine reached readers through:

  • Breweries and brewpubs
  • Pubs, alehouses, and restaurants
  • Retail accounts and bottle shops
  • Homebrew supply stores
  • Beer festivals and industry events
  • Direct subscriptions and professional distribution

At its peak, Celebrator reached an estimated audience of over 165,000 readers, connecting breweries, industry professionals, and enthusiasts through a shared passion for craft beer.

A Lasting Legacy

For decades, Celebrator has served as a consistent and credible voice in a rapidly evolving industry. It has documented the growth of craft brewing from a niche movement into a global cultural force—while maintaining a focus on authenticity, craftsmanship, and community.

While the platforms have evolved, the mission remains the same:

To inform, inspire, and celebrate the craft behind what we drink, and the culture that surrounds it.
