Oban Distillery Review: 15 Year Cask Strength Port Cask Finish

Oban Distillery Review: 15 Year Cask Strength Port Cask Finish

Nestled right in the heart of the coastal town of Oban sits one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. The famous whisky maker has been producing top-quality Scotch since 1794, and still today is coming up with some of the more notable expressions on the market. One of their more recent limited series was the 15-Year-Old cask-finished series. Initially debuting in Spring of 2025 with the US-exclusive Oloroso & Palo Cortado Cask Finish release, they’ve now released the second in the series: Pork Cask-finished.

This 15 Year Port Cask Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky began its journey in American Oak Hogshead. Subsequently, it was finished in American Oak Port Casks. As noted by the distiller, this whisky is meant to join Oban’s signature coastal character with that of Porto, Portugal. Every detail reflects thoughtful craftsmanship, inviting the drinker to savor the moment.

The team here at Celebrator was provided a fantastic opportunity to review this rare and exclusive new whisky from Oban. We’d like to thank them for allowing us the privilege of experiencing this newest expression.

The Review

Format: This sample from Oban was beautifully packaged in a 100ml rectangular glass bottle. It was bound and wrapped in a fringed Oban towel and placed in its signature illustrated tube.

This Scotch whisky pours a burnished copper color, it’s orange-brown hues trailing with exceptional legs as it is swirled around the Glencairn Copita. The nose opens dry and refined, with notes of vanilla panna cotta layered alongside raspberry jam. After a few moments, a subtle hint of driftwood adds a soft, seaside character.

An immediate sweetness greets the palate, characterized by stewed berries that are brought into balance by a light salinity. As it continues to develop in the glass, warming spices build through the mid-palate. This carries into a medium-length finish that retains an equally dry and softly sweet character. A touch of fresh pepper lingers with the heat, adding structure without overpowering.

Even at its 104.2 proof cask strength, it is an alarmingly smooth experience, exceptionally integrating the alcohol throughout. When adding a splash of water, the texture softens and the spice mellows. While initially it may seem to mute the experience, a few moments to explore instead allows for a deeper complexity.

A Refined Evolution of Oban’s Legacy

This Port-Cask-Finish expression of Oban certainly solidifies its place as a worthy continuation of not only this series, but also of a distillery that has always thrived when combining tradition and innovation. The ode to its coastal identity is ever-present, and yet is still precisely layered to balance the profile.

This is a whisky that rewards patience, both in the glass and on the palate. At cask strength, it’s a showcase of integration – approachable yet complex, bold yet composed. Adding a splash of water brings even more depth, reinforcing the idea of exploration when experiencing a dram of this quality.

It is clear that Oban is looking to elevate this series with each new release. It captures not only a sense of place, but ensures respect for the process, confidently executed. The whisky market is saturated with experimental finishes, but Oban does well to remind us here that refinement, when done right, is still one of the most powerful statements a whisky can make. And the Scottish Highlands rarely lets us down.
